Title: The Star-Touched Queen Author: Roshani Chokshi Genre: mythical fantasy
First off - the writing is GORG. Oh my goodness. I'm talking beautiful in a highly visual way - Chokshi throws together words in dazzling combinations that almost barely make sense, but speak to the language-less part of my body that understands them on a whole other level.

That being said, it was almost too much at times, specifically when magic started being thrown around. I'm all for new interpretations of what magic is and can be and do, but I would have liked clarity around the rules of magic in the universe Chokshi spins. When there are rules, plots that revolve around the rules of a system have a sense of rightness, and when any character uses their powers or the powers around them to win a battle of any size, the readers is right there with them. There's value in figuring out the world, of piecing together the hints the author drops that lead to the climax and conclusion. In The Star-Touched Queen I felt more like I was being buffeted around by the plot. Don't get me wrong - it was an adventure of awesome proportions. It was just...disorienting at times. Something would happen and instead of thinking BUT OF COURSE, instead I was thinking ummm sure why not!
Overall, very unique story, vivid writing, and captivating world - thank you for bulldozing through my mind, Chokshi!
