IT HAS HAPPENED.
I HAVE FINALLY READ SOMETHING BY STEPHEN KING.
(wowowowowowow)
This read-a-hundred-books-in-a-year journey, while mostly wildly unsuccessful, has been wonderful because I have been a) knocking books off my "to read " list like crazy, and b) reading a much more diverse selection than I normally would. Probably wouldn't have forayed into memoir if not for this self-imposed challenge, nor other non-fiction. Would probably still be reading and re-reading Harry Potter, The Kingkiller Chronicles, and The Circle of Magic.
Anyhoooooooo...
I won't make this too long, because it's King and I'm sure everything I'm going to say has already been said before. I'll just touch on a few things that stood out to me, and be done with it.

1) The women are all sluts and whores, and sex is always the main topic when they're in the mix. This book was published in the 80s, so I won't grumble too loudly - but still. Give me a fucking break.
2) King is very wordy, but I wouldn't say overly so - although he packs a whole lots of adjectives and adverbs into his writing, he manages to balance this wordiness with clarity. I never felt as though I didn't know what was going on, but could still identify the craft and beauty in his work.
3) I jumped right into the second book because the first, this one, feels more like part one than book one. The plot is a journey, and the reader is thrown into it without any idea of where we came from, and only a semblance of an idea of where we're going. There are a whole lot of unanswered questions about just about every aspect of the characters, story, and world(s). Goddamn you King, I'm intrigued by all of it!
