Title: The Slow Regard of Silent Things (The Kingkiller Chronicle)

Author: Patrick Rothfuss

Genre: fantasy novella

This novella is...okay. I hate to say that amount something from the Kingkiller Chronicle, which I love more than another other series - but it's true.

Auri's humdrum story is sandwiched between two disclaimers, one of which I appreciate and the other that just makes me mad. The first tells the reader flat-out that this book is not like the other two in the series, which it most definitely isn't. It's all Auri in her own little world with her own wild thoughts. It's very, very different - and the note from the author detailing as much is a good albeit risky tough. The second disclaimer comes at the end and basically tells the reader, if you didn't like it I didn't write it for you anyways. Which is fine, except you can say that about any piece of writing, good or bad.

Even though Rothfuss didn't, ahem, write this for me, well, I still find it lacking. It's an interesting ride at first, and I understand the whole week-in-the-life format, but by the end it's just the same old shit. Nothing really happens, and the reader doesn't even get to learn more about the Underthing. If I( sound mad, that's because I am - Rothfuss has created this cool universe with cool places and cool characters, and he won't even share it with us. Goddammit.

Just give us The Doors of Stone already!
