Title: Beloved

Author: Toni Morrison

Genre: spoooky social magical realism fiction

I've been meaning to get my hands on some Toni Morrison for a long time now, and I think the universe conspired to bring her into the forefront of my social media life so I would finally - finally - cross that threshold.

Holy mother of god.

I had no idea this was a ghost story! Jesus H christ, I was not expecting a work of art that transcends so much of what has become the norm of literature. Morrison is clearly a master in every way; her storytelling is fluid even as it jumps through time and perspectives and even worlds, and her writing is evocative and horrific and beautiful - so, so beautiful. I especially love (and covet) her ability to explore femaleness - the blood and gore and beauty of the body and the mind.

There is so much more to this book than I'm addressing in this itty bitty review - Morrison explores race and slavery, female- and male-ness, good and evil...the list goes on. Just...read it. Please.
