Title: The Knockout Queen

Author: Rufi Thorpe

Genre: fiction

This book is depressing as hell, and could not have been achieved with such success without Thorpe's extremely tight prose and almost painfully imperfect characters. The protag, Michael, has to basically sit back and watch the girl he loves like a sister spiral insidiously in the hands of her own privilege, all amidst his own struggles in love, identity, and class.

What's really made this story stay with me is how Thorpe doesn't take a moral stand, not really. She moreso shines a light on things that happen in this world - the good, bad, and in-between - and then lets the characters and the reader fumble&stumble their way through it all to a heartbreaking ending.
