Title: Park Avenue Summer Author: Renée Rosen Genre: easy breezy historical fiction
As promised by the friends who recommended this book (they read it in their book club, a club that I have inadvertently managed to "join" as a kind of shadow tick - attaching myself to their reading list and reading/reviewing the same books they do without actually being apart of it. At this point I should really just request an invite and get in on the amazing snack spread and female companionship...OR NOT), this story is an easy breezy summer read. That being said, it was almost too breezy.

Although I liked how the protag's personal journey mirrored the main storyline (i.e. the growth of Cosmo into what it is today), some conflict, some kind of barrier, was lacking. Yes, the protag's POV was a vehicle to explore the leading lady behind the magazine's success, and yes that character had her share of conflict - but I wanted the author to be more harsh on her protagonist, render her just a few shades brighter. Maybe my experience is overshadowed by The Devil Wears Prada movie, where Anne Hathaway's character is vibrant and quirky and Hathaway-ian, and the story is just as much about her defining herself as it is exploring Meryl Streep's character - but that's what Park Avenue Summer was missing: a memorable main character whose fire left more of an impression.
