Title: Another Brooklyn
Author: Jacqueline Woodson
Genre: bildungsroman - i.e. coming-of-age feverish fiction

So, so much is packed into this short novel. The loneliness of being a child trying to navigate adult situations into which they are thrust. The bond between friends - particularly between young girls - and the things that shift and change as those girls grow into young women. And the truth of tragedy. "This is memory", Woodson repeats, again and again throughout the tale - and, like being pulled through a memory, the reader is led through the protagonist's childhood and is right there with her, learning the lessons of becoming an adult.
Woodson spins a relateable tale tinged with tragedy, and the writing is melancholic, dreamlike, and beautiful. More like this please!
