Title: And the Birds Rained Down Author: Jocelyne Saucier Genre: chilling wilderness fiction

WOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOW.

WOW. What can I say? This book is just plain good. The writing is beautiful, not overwrought in any way, but often poetic and highly descriptive. The characters are multidimensional and utterly interesting - some cantankerous old men, an anxiety-ridden, fire-filled old lady, a couple loveable pot smokers, a photographer that is more than her gender, and all the other minute characters that fill out this world.

At first glance, the plot seems a little wild. Some old men have given up on society, and there were some Great Fires in the area, and now some random photographer is embroiled in their simple lives? Oh, and there are a couple dudes growing some funny plants (which are completely legal no - happy legalization, Canada!). But Saucier proves to be a master storyteller. Somehow she makes this twisted plot work in a way that no synopsis can truly capture. There's mystery, philosophy, love - and doggos!

Is There a Bow?

No; the end doesn't wrap everything up all nice-like, but enough ends are tracked down and tied off that the reader achieves that perfect balance of closure vs thought-provoking mystery that lives on after the last page has been read.

UGH so good. Read it! Just read it. I implore you.

Also...Canadian female author alert! WOOT WOOT.
