Title: Beauty
Author: Bri Lee
Genre: essay

In an essay-like format, Lee takes the reader through her own exploration of the facets and intricacies of self-esteem, body-image, perfectionism, and the mass-produced definition of "beauty". She is particularly critical of the fashion industry and Instagram, as well as herself as a product and vehicle of both. I was especially impacted by her comments about how actions communicate priorities, no matter what you might say. For example, saying how someone is beautiful at any age, but then buying anti-aging cream. Telling a friend they are gorgeous at any size - and then restricting your own diet and mentioning "cheat days". You can say any damn thing you want, but your actions - in particular where you put that money, honey - speaks much, much louder.
