Title: Shade's Children
Author: Garth Nix
Genre: Post-apocalyptic, interdimensional sci-fi
This is going to be a shorter review because a) I'm downright exhausted from venting about An American Marriage, and b) about halfway through this book I realized I had already read it...woops.

Okay, so is a YA book, something that quickly becomes apparent in the simplistic, almost careful language used by the Nix. The characters are pretty flat and predictable, and it's a quick, easy read. There are some themes and situations that are pretty damn adult, and I'm thinking that's what must have hooked me when I was but a wee lass because I remember thinking that the story was way more edgy and dark than I take it to be now.
The idea, though, is very cool. I would love to see it realized in adult sci-fi. Humans bred for parts for various species of battle pawns to be used in skirmishes between monster teams from another dimension? I can get behind that!
