Title: A Thousand Splendid Suns Author: Khaled Hosseini Genre: Multigen hardship fiction

This book is beautiful...and terrible.

The prose is easy to follow, while still including words in other languages besides English, and effortless brings to life vibrant scenes populated by so-real-you-can-touch-them characters.

The novel follows the lives of two women, first separately then together, as they live through incredible hardship, heartbreak, and beauty. These woman are badasses in a context that does everything to prevent them from being so.

Throughout this story, I was constantly reminded of how lucky I am to be a white Canadian woman in 2018. I don't need no man to escort me places, nobody dictates what I wear except me, and I have so many resources should I fall on serious hardship.

To be honest, this book made me want to travel more, which is something I've never been enthusiastic about. Sure, I like to go places, but I've never had the bug like others seem to get. This book might have fanned the itty-bitty travel-flame inside me, simply because it highlighted how sheltered I am in my life and experiences.

But, for now, I suppose I'll just keep devouring the stories of and from the places I might one day see.
