Title: Stay With Me

Author: Ayòbámi Adébáyò

Genre: domestic fiction

I had a tough time with this book. It was a good read, for sure, one that I did enjoy in many ways. But it was also very, very frustrating.

That's not the book's fault; it's a matter of con tent VS reader. The whole story focuses around a family's attempt to get pregnant, stay pregnant, and keep that baby alive, all within a society where polygamy is the norm and family dynamics are an every day importance. As someone who a) doesn't want kids, and b) doesn't define family by bloodlines, most of the themes were outside my general scope of interest.

But that doesn't mean I can't enjoy stories about these things. The writing itself is engrossing, with a cadence that is atypical of North American fiction and breathes life and meaning into the characters and places. The plot, though, is somewhat warbled - the interjections about the political goings-on felt disjointed with the rest of the story, and even though we sort of see why they are there at the end of the story, I wasn't convinced.
