Title: City of Girls
Author: Elizabeth Gilbert
Genre: historical fiction
This book is EXACTLY what the doctor ordered.

I expected a romp through the world of theatre, but I did not expect it to be so goddamn enjoyable. The reader discovers 60s New York through the eyes of Vivian, a restless, underachieving high-class gal with some serious skill with a sewing machine and a surprisingly feminist view of sex. The story definitely takes a turn from the pink champagne-esque vibes when the war hits and Vivian's life comes crashing down to earth for that and other reasons, but Gilbert's frothy and wonderful writing keeps the reader rattling right alongside Vivian until the very end.
This is not a love story - this a story about love. Vivian's relationships are the core of this novel, and her growth as a character is realistic and delicious. I wasn't on vacation and I wasn't on the beach, but this is the perfect read for both - and more.
