Title: Parable of the Sower Author: Octavia Butler Genre: dystopian fiction
Listen, I love Octavia Butler. She is one of, if not my favourite, authors of ALL time, and she is definitely my favourite science fiction author.

BUT.
I did not love this book. Octavia - Ms. Butler - I am sorry. Yes, okay, it's well-written, harrowing, and beautiful in the way only Butler knows how to execute. The characters are fucked up and strong and scary and real. I just have a hard time getting into journal-entry-type stories and journey-ing-type stories - and this is both. Written in diary installments by the protagonist, the narrative follows the decline of civilization in a scarily believable not-so-distant future through the eyes of a young woman travelling "north" and slowly gathering a rag-tag group of followers who are attracted to the safety her posse promises, but stay for the burgeoning religion she preaches.
Not my favourite, but still worth the read. RIP, Octavia, you precious, glorious soul.
